Today we are going to talk about purpose. I absolutely LOVE this subject! A lot of times we’re talking about our plans in life, but I like to use the word purpose because it means there’s a purpose behind what you’re doing. There may be several different plans in place. I might keep messing up on plan A, B, or plan C. Thank God we have a merciful, graceful God.
Purpose is a subject that should be talked about more often. If someone is missing their purpose, then I believe the body as a whole is affected. So when I talk about purpose, let me just say that personally, I believe that everyone has a purpose. When you are in the family of God, He has an individual purpose for us all.
You will hear me mention this a lot, but I believe we should be living out the gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. We should be living that Christ-like life and living toward our purpose. Within this, we all might have different callings. We’re not all cookie cutter and meant for the same thing. We’re not just existing on this planet as one of seven billion that was designed exactly the same. As believers, we may feel like this often. We may feel powerless and pointless and that God may have forgotten about us.
Remember that you are specifically and uniquely made. You are an individual and you are part of the body. You have your own personality, sense of humor, and those things might change. You do have free will. We’re not all the same and thank God for that. But, I do believe that individually you have a purpose and God has equipped you with that you need to achieve that purpose. There’s growth and you may be going through a shaping process, but realize that He is not going to force you into it. You have to be obedient and willing to grow.
I love this subject because I know so many people are simply going to work. They’re doing the 9-5 thing and I’m not saying that’s wrong. They’re getting home and they’re cooking or putting something in the microwave, sitting in front of the TV and not being fulfilled. You’re yearning for something more, even if you already have Christ. I’m just being honest. Yes, we have what we need, but if we’re not walking in it, there’s that burning desire that keeps tugging at you. There’s something more. There’s something more. God made you for something great.
Live out Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. I know you have something inside you that you could be pursuing. It may be a certain career or some sort of post within an organization as an evangelist. I believe that we should all evangelize, but there are some that may be called to evangelize full time. Some may open up churches, or write a book. Something’s been placed on your heart.
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do and he will establish your plans.”
What a beautiful saying! Notice that we have something to do here- we have to commit. That’s part of free will. We need to commit to Him. This is the idea of keeping our eyes on Jesus. If not, we’re not committed, if we’re not abiding in him if we’re not working on our relationship with the Father, and we’re caught up in the cares of the world or we’re caught up in our careers, we distort the first part of this. We establish our plans. I have done this so many times. I don’t know about you. My guess is that at times you have said.. you know what? I’m going to establish my own plans. I’m going to do it often due to wanting to stay within my little bubble or trying to take the safer route. To be honest, I do this with good intentions too. I do believe that God will give us some choices like hey- what career do you want. Let’s do it!
God is right there with you, and when your lens is still on Him, then He’s establishing your plan because He’s with you. It’s all aligned with purpose. Where I have gone wrong is in not committing which ultimately was just not trusting. I started trusting my own abilities which now we’re also talking about pride even though I didn’t feel prideful. I didn’t feel like I had it all figured out. That’s when I found myself wandering. Yes, God was still with me and he was working that idea that there was more than plan A, B, or C. Like, alright, let’s do this!
Ultimately it was in pursuit of this. If you’re changing jobs or whatever, just keep your lens on Him and within that, your purpose lies. Let’s read Proverbs 16:3 one more time: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do and he will establish your plans.” I don’t know about you, but I’m thankful for that! Sometimes I may get really excited about certain plans, but it’s always with Him. I may take it on my own and think I have a great plan, but it could turn out disastrous. I’m not saying that we’re not growing and that everything is going to be smooth sailing, but in that struggle focus on Him, regardless of your age or where you’re at, the focus is on Him. It’s not on any financial burden where you know that we are not to look at the mountain. Keep looking at Him. Don’t focus on the financial burden or the family relational problem. This isn’t to say that we should be in denial about issues that come up. It’s that you are seeing through it and seeing Jesus.
Alright, let’s take a look at Proverbs 20:20- “For a person’s steps are directed by the Lord, how then can anyone understand their own way.” You can see some of the connection here. We are patterning with God. We are co-pilots, co-creators with God. I know that can sound absurd. We’re not really big, but we are really big because of the one who is inside of us. I know it can sound crazy. It’s absurd to think that God wants to work with us. But, isn’t that a beautiful thought? Isn’t it beautiful that we have a choice and He has empowered us so we need to make sure that our focus is on Him. He will direct our steps.
When we don’t focus on Him, and we’re not committed, and not abiding in Him and we’re not living the faithful life when we start to establish our plans, we start to take our own steps. How can anyone understand their own way when He is directing our path? He’s the one we want establishing our plans and walking those steps with us while teaching us. This is why it’s so important to always be reading scripture, being in prayer, being intimate with the Father. So you can hear from him and clearly understand. Your faith in Him grows. You are not afraid of man.
I’m not saying go on and be all crazy. No, I’m saying that we’re not looking, we’re with Him so we’re not afraid of what people think or talking badly about us because we’re pursuing something they don’t understand. I’m even talking about those family members close to you that might not understand your purpose. Why are you out doing this and that?
Be in constant communication with Him.
“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
You know we hear about God’s word. It is extremely powerful. If He has spoken something in you, we could look into the idea that when it rains it soaks the soil. It’s feeding the plants. You have the sun then the rain comes and it’s this beautiful process. That’s nothing in comparison to God’s word. It can’t go void, so if He’s spoken a word over you about your purpose, then that desire in your heart says we’ll accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose. Words are powerful. If you’ve ever been spoken a word or you feel it in your heart like you’re supposed to go do something, then there’s a reason why it’s still there. You may have tried hiding it or focusing on other things but you still have this calling in your heart. I can’t tell you what to do with it. All I can tell you is to take it up with Father God. Ask God if He has placed this on your heart and ask Him what to do with it. Watch the doors start to open when you step out in faith!
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. Before you were born I set you apart.”
In Jeremiah 1:5 we’re talking about prophets. God is saying I set you apart and that He knew him before the mother’s womb. That goes for all of us. This is back to the idea that we’re not cookie cutter. We’re not all the same. God carefully, fearfully, and wonderfully made us. He knows you. God is big. He’s not just like “Oh, I have so many of you. How do I keep track?” You were made for a purpose. Be encouraged, brothers and sisters. We need you to start living in this purpose. There is a kind of urgency.
Let’s talk about a few things. How do I pursue this? There are pretty common sense things, I would say, that we should be doing. We need Him to be number one. Spend time with God in prayer. So, what kind of prayer? Listen- don’t just spend time talking to Him, listen. Don’t treat God like a genie. He’s your creator. He’s also called us friend. Within friendship, we have to work. Meaning, we need to build the friendship. Spend time with Him, even when you don’t feel anything, it’s okay. Every time you pray I believe something’s moving. Something has changed. Even if it hasn’t fully manifested. Something has changed in the spiritual realm. Spend time with your Papa. Study His word, read the scripture. Once again, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John- live out the gospels and the desires that have been placed in your heart.
So, Bobby, how do I know if it’s God or it’s my own desires? Sometimes it might feel really powerful and you may not even feel equipped to do it. You may ask “Why me?” You may not see yourself as an overly spiritual person. You may say I didn’t get good grades in school, why would you call me to do this? I don’t have ten million dollars in the bank. You could come up with all these ideas, but guess what? Look at the bible. God picked perfect people, perfect for Him. People who were open-hearted to Him. Throughout scripture, we have people who messed up. He picked fishermen, tax collectors, he didn’t pick the most religious people who knew scripture. He can use you.
With that, pray and look for those confirmations. Start moving forward. You’ll know if it’s pure and if it’s good, but don’t use that as an excuse to not move forward. I haven’t had the audible voice of the Lord show up and say “go do this.” Pray. Listen. Don’t lose hope.
Once again, don’t fall into concerns about your age, financial circumstances, networking, location. Don’t lose hope. We serve a big God. So make sure you’re spending time with Him. Within this, we could all break it down. Obviously far more- what are some good strategies (not that we need a formula), but ways of knowing who we are and what Jesus did for us on the cross. That changes your prayer time. There’s a lot of teaching within this. A lot of studying the word. This doesn’t mean memorizing scripture, but having the power behind the word. Scripture is powerful.
There are ways of praying and journaling and checking in on where you are. Maybe you’re exactly where you should be. You were made for something big. I can say that boldly. I can say that directly and with absolute certainty. You were made for something big. I believe wholeheartedly that the father in heaven knew you before you were even in your mother’s womb. He carefully made you for something big and I also know that if you are a believer of Christ, you have the same spirit that rose Jesus Christ from the dead dwelling within you. Therefore, without any doubt, by that alone and partnering along with God, and realizing that you have the tools, the authority, the dominion through faith and living out the gospels to live an unbelievable life.
It’s hard to even articulate how big you are and what you are. Keep pursuing Him, abiding in Him, committing to Him, and living out the gospels. Even just thinking about it, that’s what I’m talking about. You were made for something big. Maybe it’s time to get into prayer if you haven’t yet been living committed to Him. Let Him start to make that path. Let Him show you that He is with you. He will establish your plans.
It’s fun, guys! The Christian life is not boring! I’m telling you that we may think of it as following a bunch of rules, going to church, and that’s it. The Christian life is truly fun when you are abiding in Him and being obedient. Living that holy life. I love you guys so much! And so does God!
